I just read the weblog section in Will's book on
Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts. I want to use blogs in my science class. I might consider discussions of activities done in class, thoughts on class content, project work, results of a WebQuest, etc. I like the idea that blogs are ongoing conversations that can help you synthesize your thoughts.
Will's book does in a book what we are doing in blogs: identifying uses of blogs in education. We're doing it in short sound bites with no proofreading editors and he systematically organized his thoughts. It's good to know we're on the right track and that his idea support our dreams or inspire our future.
ReplyDeleteDiscussions are great but considering the first hand experiences that we're having right here and now, what are the disadvantages or challenges that we need to consider or overcome? How do the advantages balance with these challenges? Such as are our classmates reading this? Are their useful and supportive thoughts being manifested as comments so that we can all benefit?
My principal just gave me that book, I'm interested to know what pages you found the most useful.
ReplyDeleteChapters 2 and 3 are quick reads. Page 15 did talk about security issues to minimize risks for students. Page 16 had a contract that students had to sign. Page 20 listed some of the positive impacts of blogs on students. I also liked the bottom of page 30 and top of page 31 where they compared writing to blogging. Bogging continues, is conversation, and provides for synthesis. Enjoy.
